Programme in Terneuzen City Center
9-27 October 2024
Starting from Wednesday 9 October, six sculptures by the art collective of plantation workers CATPC are on display in the center of Terneuzen, the Netherlands, as part of the celebration of the opening of the new sluices. This is a step towards the programme LEARN, DIG, BUILD, leading up to a new arts center in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen that will focus on exchange between global working-class communities.
The sculptures created by CATPC in clay, are reproduced in materials from the plantation (cocoa, palm fat and sugar). They convey the pain and evil of colonialism. At the same time, they are objects of hope and repair; with the proceeds of their art, CATPC buys back land that has been completely depleted by companies like Unilever and restores it into food forests that will feed future generations.
On Saturday 12 October, Renzo Martens will give a talk about CATPC's work and their collaboration. He will also talk about the concept behind the project in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and invite the audience to share their ideas. The talk is at 13:30 in Porgy and Bess. The film White Cube will also be shown there at 11:00 and 16:00. Walk in is free.
The sculptures are exhibited from 9 to 27 October in the center of Terneuzen. Find out more about the Opening of the Sluices programme here.
